Hales Machine Tool (HMT) opened their doors in October of 1983. President Chuck Hales had already began creating relationships with builders of machine tools he thought would sell well in the Midwest.
In 1984, HMT had their very first open house there were only three builders that were present at the show. Over the years they have added some of the best builders from all of the world. Each builder filling different market needs and giving the sales and application team solutions for almost all manufacturing problems.
Chuck and his team realized doing an open house every year got redundant with similar technology being shown from year to year. They decided to go every other year in the April following an IMTS year. This was usually when builders would release new technology and would give their customers a chance to see some of the technology they missed out on if they were not in Chicago for IMTS.
HMT has continued that tradition since the early ‘90s and it is finally that time once again! The show starts Tuesday, April 23 and goes through Friday April 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day at 2730 Niagara Lane N., in Plymouth.
HMT usually has anywhere from $4-6 million in equipment on their floor for the show. This gives their customers a chance to get up close and watch chips being made with their own eyes. The Hales application team makes it their mission to show off all of the equipment to their full capabilities. Often times these shows cause machine shop owners, operation managers, and engineers to reconsider the current processes they are operating.
This show isn’t just to show off new technology, but for customers to get familiar with different builders that currently are not on their shop floor. In most shops, there is at least one job or operation that is inefficient and could use improvement in that specific process. This open house is the perfect opportunity to speak with direct support from each builder to learn about what makes each of them unique to the market and how they could help your production and efficiency.
The open house is a fun time, with no sales pressure and a lot of new technology to see. There will be Multi-Axis Turning Centers, a Vertical Turning Lathe, multiple machining centers, and also featuring a 4 + 1 vertical machining center. These world class builders include Index/Traub, STUDER, Brother, SMEC (Samsung), Takamaz, DMC, YCM, Hanwha, Markforged 3D printing, Acsys laser cutting & marking, Ganesh, Amada band saws, Cosen Band saws plus many accessory and tooling suppliers.
The food menu throughout the week is usually a highlight for a lot of the customers that get to attend. It is a great chance to get out of the office to see some new technology, but you get to leave with a full stomach as well! There is a new entrée each day and Friday will be capped off with prime rib!
In past open houses, HMT has had local boxing great Scott LeDoux and legendary pro wrestler Verne Gonya. They have shown off motorcycles and even a NASCAR in the past! This year will be great for all of Vikings fans. There will be Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders at the open house on Friday from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. Come meet the cheerleaders, take a picture, and get an autograph. If prime rib and the best technology isn’t a good enough reason to stop, hopefully this pushes you over the edge!
